Dracut’s Talbot nets career-high 45 points

Ashlee Talbot has had a fabulous career at Dracut High, one that’s seen her go over the 1,000-point plateau.

But the senior guard enjoyed a game Sunday she won’t soon forget. Talbot scored 31 in the first half and finished with a careerhigh 45 points to lead the Middies’ girls basketball team to a 78-62 win over a strong Newburypor­t squad Sunday at the St. Mary’s Spartan Classic.

The win advances Dracut (15-5) into the finals against the winner of Lincoln-sudbury/st. Mary’s Lynn on Tuesday (5:45 p.m.) at St Mary’s Lynn.

Dracut led 46-28 at halftime. Senior forward Emma Felker chipped 20 points and 11 rebounds. Senior center Amaya Alkassar controlled the boards with 20 rebounds to start the Dracut fast breaks. Dracut employed pressure defense to pace the victory and lead the Middies to the win in the MVC/CAL matchup.

LOWELL 45 >> Cohasset star Sarah Chenette led all scorers with 22, 10 in the fourth quarter, as the Gryphons fell just short during a Skaff Winterfest Tournament game at Lowell Catholic.

Greater Lowell (17-3) trailed by five after one, but held Cohasset to six second-quarter points to take a 23-21 halftime lead. Emily Sandellia netted 12 points and had six steals for the Gryphons, while Kendra O’brien added 10 points. Mariah Lorenzo earned nine points.

CATHOLIC 39 >> Kathleen was named to the all-tournament team, but Central Catholic was defeated in a consolatio­n game of the Comcast Tournament.

Central finishes 8-12. Smith netted 11 points. 26 >> Carly Dimento led the way with 20 points and eight assists as the Tigers won in the first round of the CMADA Tournament.

Tyngsboro led 12-2 after one quarter and 28-7 at halftime in easily advancing. Gianna Donato added 18 and 10 rebounds. Katie O’keefe added six points. The Tigers play Wednesday vs. the winner of Littleton/hopedale

at 6 p.m. at home. 39 >> The Indians were defeated by a powerful Pentucket team in the first round of the Spartan Classic at St Mary’s. Billerica had trouble stopping senior Abby Dube, who tallied 18 points for Pentucket (16-4).

Boys basketball

58 >> Maxwell Smith tallied a team-high 18 points as the Tigers upset Tyngsboro in the CMADA Tournament. Justin Manno drained three 3-pointers and finished with 14 points for Littleton.

Brian Maresse and John Woodward each added eight points for the winners. Littleton advances to the semifinal round.

For Tyngsboro, which led by five points at halftime, Gavin Familia led the way with 16 points and Bryce Goulet was right behind with a 15-point performanc­e. Trevor Drew garnered eight points.

Boys hockey

TECH 1 >> Thanks to the tie, Shawsheen Tech clinched a split of the CAC league title with Essex Tech.

Lowell Catholic’s goal came from Lucas Rego and was set up by Keegan Boyden. Vinny D’urso was outstandin­g between the pipes with 40 saves. Gage Richard, Jimmy Kierce and Andrew Marcucci played fine all-around games.

LOWELL 2, MARBLEHEAD 1 >> The Red Raiders won in a shootout in the semifinal of the 26th annual Newburypor­t Bank Ice Hockey Classic. Eighth-grader Aaron Sosa scored a second-period goal for Lowell.

Senior Thomas Woodlock and junior Teddy Steinberg scored in the shootout for the Red Raiders. Senior Aidan Lavoie made 55 saves, including stopping both shootout attempts, in goal for Lowell. Lowell will play in the championsh­ip against Norwell (19-1) on Tuesday.

Girls hockey

WESTON/WAYLAND 2 >> The Raiders received two more goals in picking up the narrow victory. Kailin Sullivan and Gianna Demedeiros also sent shots into the Weston/wayland cage.
