Westford punches ticket to the state tournament

Dracut girls set program record by winning 13th MVC game

It came down to the wire, but the Westford Academy boys hockey team is headed to the MIAA state tournament.

On the final day of the regular season, the Ghosts skated to a 5-2 victory over Billerica at O’brien Rink in Woburn. The win qualified Westford for states.

Nick Burns and David Maclure fueled the offensive attack with twogoal performanc­es. Tom Rose also found the back of the Billerica net. Dishing out two assists were Ben Mulgrew and Ethan Koehr.

Picking up an assist each were Jack Nelken, Matt Haggan, JJ Funaro and Nate Mucci. Tyler Frazee was strong between the pipes for the Ghosts. SHAWSHEEN 5, METHUEN 1 >> The Rams were strong in posting their 16th win of the season. Sparking the Billerica team’s offense with a two-goal performanc­e was Chase Darcey.

Brady Darcey was in a giving mood, dishing out three assists for Shawsheen (16-3-1).

Girls basketball

50 >> Dracut squeaked out a tough victory versus a pesky Tewksbury team to improve to 16-6 (13-2 MVC). The 13 MVC wins is the most league wins in Dracut’s program history.

Dracut was led by senior forward Emma Felker with 27 points and senior guard Ashlee Talbot chipped in 21, including two key free throws to stretch the lead to four with 12.6 seconds left.

The Middies await the final power rankings on Saturday. Dracut is the No. 6 seed in the MIAA power rankings and should have a home game in the Round of 32. Tewksbury (9-11) received a terrific 25-point game from Sam Ryan.

Girls gymnastics

G-D TOP SEED >> The Girls Sectional Tournament will be held Saturday at Algonquin Regional High School. The North Sectional will begin at 9 a.m., with the South Sectional slated to start at 2 p.m.

Two local teams are in the North field, Westford Academy and Wilmington/bedford. The top seed in the South is Grotonduns­table.
