Scam seminar presented to older adults

TOWNSEND — Marc Gravelle, vice president of learning & development at Rollstone Bank & Trust, presented a seminar to residents on Thursday, March 9. The event, held at the Senior Center, provided tips and education about fraud and scams perpetuated on older adults.

According to a January 2022 analysis of federal and state data by Comparitech, a cybersecurity research company, more than 369,000 incidents of financial abuse targeting seniors are reported to authorities in the U.S. each year, causing an estimated $4.8 billion in losses.

“Perpetrators can be anyone from strangers to trusted family members,” Gravelle said in a statement. “Seniors are often targeted by fraudsters for a variety of reasons, including dependence on others for medical and financial matters, but these issues affect people of all ages. By educating ourselves about fraud, we are better protected from becoming a victim and can feel more at ease about the security of our finances.”
