BROOKS DOMINATES IN MEN’S HOOP CONQUEST

Women’s basketball team also victorious against UMBC

Max Brooks powered the Umass Lowell men’s basketball team to victory Thursday.

Brooks was immense in a 9380 victory over UMBC in Baltimore, Md., as he netted 31 points and ripped down 19 rebounds.

The River Hawks (16-6) rebounded from a loss to New Hampshire. UML led 41-24 at halftime and by 20 points at one point. The visitors were 34-for-64 from the floor (52.3 percent) and 21-for-28 from the free throw line.

Quinton Mincey collected 21 points, while Ayinde Hikim (14 points) and Cam Morris III (12 points) also reached double figures.

The River Hawks dominated inside, outscoring the hosts 5838 in the paint. UML plays at NJIT on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Women’s basketball

The River Hawks received a team-high 21 points from Abbey Lindsey to gain a 71-60 win over UMBC at the Costello Athletic Center in Lowell.

UML (5-18, 5-6) received balanced scoring to capture the win. Also scoring in double figures were Rayne Durant (17 points), Mili Carrera (16 points) and Sydney Watkins (11 points).

The River Hawks won despite a 33-point performanc­e from UMBC’S Anna Blount.

Men’s hockey

The River Hawks are set to host Hockey East rival Vermont for a pair of games this weekend. Puck drops are 7:15 p.m. Friday and 6:05 p.m. Saturday at the Tsongas Center.

UML (7-17-2, 3-11-1) is coming off a 6-1 loss to Boston College.

The loss dropped the River Hawks to 1-8-1 at home. The River Hawks are 11th and last in Hockey East, two points behind Merrimack, although they have played two fewer league games than the Warriors.

Vermont (11-12-1, 5-8-1) sits in ninth place. The Catamounts are coming off a split with New Hampshire. UML won the previous meeting this season, capturing a 2-1 victory on Dec. 3 in Burlington, Vt.

A win Friday would give head coach Norm Bazin his 300th career win between Hamilton College and UML.
