How local runners did on Monday

For most, anyway, it wasn’t a day for setting personal bests.

Due to rising temperatur­es and near constant sunshine, Monday’s Boston Marathon was a day to find a way to reach the finish line on Boylston Street in Boston, especially for runners who started in Wave 4 and didn’t leave Hopkinton until, at the earliest, 11:15 a.m.

A tip of the cap to all of the runners, especially five who continued impressive streaks of completing the 26.2 mile journey — Gerard Ottaviano of Westford (39th in row), Scott Graham of Westford (38), Brian Crane of Townsend (36), Steve Kanaracus of Lowell (35) and Michael Kent of Billerica (32).

Ghosts earned a strong win.

Jake Cullen (1-1) was the winning pitcher. He allowed no hits in five scoreless innings, striking out five and walking three. Ryan Snow, who allowed one hit and one run in two innings, earned the save.

Offensivel­y, Westford received hits from Nic Bonica, Cullen, James Mcdermott, Shane Clark and Snow. HAVERHILL 13, LOWELL 4 » Coming off a big win over Acton-boxboro, the Red Raiders were defeated in MVC action.

Mike Webber ripped a triple for Lowell, while Angel Tineo clubbed a double. Adding a hit each were Ben Durkin and Chris Wyman. ANDOVER 7, TEWKSBURY 5 » The Redmen led 4-0 after one inning, but the hosts ultimately fell in nine innings during a MVC thriller.

Andover scored two runs in the top of the ninth on a double to pull out the victory. Kyle Cummings led Tewksbury with three hits. In the four-run first, Phil Lombardi and Anthony Defranco both laced two-run hits. Matt Cooke also drove in a run.

BILLERICA 9, CHELMSFORD 7 » The Indians rallied from a 7-0 deficit to defeat their longtime MVC rival in a high-scoring battle.

Billerica exploded for six runs in the second to take a one-run lead. Senior captain Gus O’gara went 2-for-3 with two doubles and three runs scored. Junior left-hander Justin Poirier pitched five solid innings of two-hit baseball to pick up the victory in relief. Senior captain Matt Macleod chipped in two hits and an RBI. Nolan Dawson got the save with 1.1 innings of nohit ball.

For Chelmsford, Nick Ly and Sean Whalen combined to toss 4.1 innings of onerun ball. Jack Keyo led the offense with two hits. Supplying one hit each for the Lions were Finn Ramseyer (triple), Grant Engelhardt, Will Morgan, Evan Kobrenski and Matthew Hall.

Boys lacrosse

G-D 7, LITTLETON 6 » Despite a terrific 21-save performanc­e from Littleton goalie Gage Carroll, Groton-dunstable narrowly earned a hard-fought Mid-wach victory. For Littleton, Zach Milner tallied two goals an an assist. Jake Taglieri also scored two goals, while Liam Smith posted a goal and assist, and Logan Grant found the back of the net. NAUSET 11, CENTRAL 8 » Despite a three-goal performanc­e from Luke Faletra, Central Catholic was nipped in non-league play.

Also scoring goals for the Raiders were Mason Bachry (2), Ethan Mitchell, Cam Brosnihan and Chase Akstin. Ryan Tighe dished out three assists and Jake Lydon made nine saves. TYNGSBORO 12, ST. BERNARD’S 8 » Sophomore attack Joey Salerno led the scoring parade with five goals as the Tigers notched the Mid-wach victory.

Junior midfielder Jake O’brien was immense with four goals and 11 faceoff wins, while junior attack Luke Teta tallied three goals and two assists. Also starring were junior defender Dylan Preston (assist, 6 caused turnovers) and senior attack Brett Anderson (2 assists).

Boys volleyball

MINNECHAUG 3, DRACUT 1 » The Middies dropped the non-league encounter, 2522, 23-25, 25-17, 25-22.

Starring for the Middies was Britton Scott with 14 kills, six blocks and six service points. Audom Mok contribute­d 11 kills, 11 digs and five service points.

Girls tennis

G-D 5, NORTH MIDDLESEX 0 » Singles victories from Nora Petros (6-2, 6-0), Gwen Kimball (6-0, 6-0) and Bianca Freenan (7-5, 10-5) propelled Groton-dunstable to the Mid-wach win.

The Crusaders (3-0) completed the sweep thanks to doubles wins from the teams of Ashley Christians­on/gabby

Norris (6-3, 6-1) and Maggie Sullivan/tanvi Malhan (6-0, 6-1).

For North Middlesex (22), Hira Khan played well at No. 3 singles.

College baseball

UML STAYS HOT » Freshman Ryan Strand (Goffstown, N.H.) went 3-for-5 with two homers, including a ninth-inning grand slam, to lead Umass Lowell to a 12-5 win over the Merrimack College Warriors in North Andover.

Junior Conor Kelly (Hopkinto) and graduate student Ryan Proto (Centervill­e) each tallied three hits and combined for four RBI for the River Hawks (15-19). Senior Fritz Genther (Kingston, N.Y.) and sophomore Carlos Martinez (Coamo, Puerto Rico) tallied two hits and two runs apiece.

Freshman Cam Sime (Pittsfield) went 5.0 innings with one strikeout to earn his first collegiate win.
