Death figures show reporting lag

San Bernardino County’s record 94 fatalities Friday actually include none from this month

Health officials have reported the largest one-day coronavirus death toll ever in San Bernardino County.

The 94 deaths reported Friday exceed the record of 75 on Feb. 4.

But none of those 94 people died of the virus that causes COVID-19 in March. Instead, the numbers come to 28 who died in February, 58 who died in January and eight in December.

There consistently has been a lag between when people die and when their death gets added to the county’s system.

Meanwhile, in Riverside County, the average number of new coronavirus cases is less than half of what it was 2½ weeks ago.

As of Friday, the seven-day average of cases has dropped to 208 per day. On Feb. 16, that number was 438.

At a White House briefing Thursday, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the top U.S. infectious disease expert, warned that virus infections may be plateauing in the nation after weeks of declines, and that a new wave of infections, as has been seen in Europe, may be on the way.

Starting Monday, the former Sears at the Moreno Valley Mall will replace Riverside County’s Corona High School vaccination site, which closed Friday. The public health team at Corona High will transfer to the Moreno Valley Mall location.

The former Sears is at 22550 Town Circle, Moreno Valley. Shots will be given from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays. To check for eligibility or schedule an appointment, go to RivCoPH.org/COVID-19-Vaccinewith-Registration.

In Los Angeles County, officials expect to receive 312,000 vaccine doses next week, including 53,700 doses of the new Johnson & Johnson shot, which requires only one dose. It will be the biggest allotment since vaccine deliveries began to Los Angeles County in December. This week, the county received 269,000 doses.
