GAME RECAP: ANGELS 7, A’S 3

THE GAME: Luis Rengifo, Justin Upton and Jose Rojas hit home runs in the Angels’ 7-3 victory over the Oakland A’s on Friday afternoon in a seven-inning game at Hohokam Park in Mesa, Ariz.

PITCHING REPORT: Righthander Shohei Ohtani struck out five and allowed one run in 1-2⁄3 innings. Ohtani’s fastball was 96-100 mph.

... Left-hander Patrick Sandoval walked the bases loaded in his first inning, but got out of it with a double play. He tacked on a perfect second inning. He had three strikeouts in his outing. Sandoval has not allowed a run in three innings this spring . ... Right-hander Jesse Chavez pitched in his first game of the spring, allowing one run. The Angels signed the veteran to a minor-league deal just after spring training opened.

HITTING REPORT: Rengifo hit an opposite-field homer, his first of the spring. Manager Joe Maddon said earlier in the week that it’s a good sign when Rengifo is using the whole field . ... Upton launched a line drive over the left-field fence, his first homer of the spring . ... Shortstop Jose Iglesias hit a ball off the center-field fence for his second triple of the spring. He also has a homer . ... Catcher Max Stassi got the start at DH and struck out in both his trips. It was Stassi’s first game of the spring. Stassi, who is recovering from hip surgery, should be ready to catch in a game soon, Maddon said . ... Outfielder Jo Adell walked and struck out in his two trips to the plate. He is 0 for 6 with four strikeouts and four walks this spring . ... Jose Rojas hit a homer.

DEFENSE REPORT: Taylor Ward finished the game at catcher. Ward was drafted as a catcher, but was converted to infield and then outfield. He had not played catcher in a major-league exhibition game since before he first reached the majors. ... Shortstop Jeremiah Jackson made a nice play on a bouncer up the middle. He stepped on second and threw to first to get a double play that helped the Angels escape a bases-loaded jam.
