Heaney goes back on IL with sore shoulder

-

One start after returning from a shoulder injury that sidelined him for two months, Dodgers left-hander Andrew Heaney is back on the injured list with the same problem.

According to Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, Heaney felt “some achiness, soreness in his shoulder” during his bullpen session on Thursday morning in Cincinnati. The session was cut short and Heaney flew back to Los Angeles to have his shoulder examined.

The exam revealed a strained rotator cuff, the same problem that sent him to the injured list after two starts in April but “not as severe,” Roberts said.

“I don’t foresee it being long,” Roberts said.

Heaney could resume throwing in a few days and possibly miss as few as two starts. Reliever Reyes Moronta was called up to take Heaney’s place on the roster Friday but right-hander Mitch White also joined the Dodgers in Atlanta and will make Heaney’s scheduled start today. White was demoted to Triple-A Oklahoma City two weeks ago and isn’t eligible to be recalled until Saturday.

Roberts acknowledged that Heaney’s shoulder soreness recurring so quickly after returning is troubling and his workload within games might have to be monitored more closely the rest of the season to keep him healthy.

“I think it’s a little worrisome, a little frustrating more for Andrew because he did a lot to get back to that point,” Roberts said. “But it’s where we’re at. So our job now and his job is to do whatever we can to get him back on the mound as soon as we can.”

The Angels’ Shohei Ohtani avoids a close pitch during the first inning against the Seattle Mariners on Friday.
