Family Service Association named a Nonprofit of the Year

- Staff report

State Sen. Rosilicie Ochoa Bogh, R-Yucaipa, recently honored the Family Service Association, which has been serving the Inland Empire since the 1950s, as the 2022 Nonprofit of the Year for California’s 23rd Senate District.

“Seeing a need in your community and then actively doing something about it speaks volumes of someone’s character. FSA’s founders did just that,” Ochoa Bogh said in a news release.

“Now, nearly 70 years later, FSA has grown into an essential and responsive nonprofit that connects communities across Riverside and San Bernardino counties with vital services. I am privileged to name them the 2022 Nonprofit of the Year for Senate District 23,” Ochoa Bogh said.

“We are honored that Family Service Association was selected by Senator Ochoa Bogh as a California Nonprofit of the Year,” Cheryl-Marie Hansberger, chief executive officer of Family Service Association, said in the news release.

“This recognition comes at a time when we have been working hard to help our region recover from the pandemic and provide additional support to children, families and seniors across the Inland Empire. It’s especially meaningful now, but we got here because of our dedicated employees, volunteers and partners who are resilient and committed to the mission of Family Service Association,” Hansberger said.

The Junior League and local faith-based organizations in the city of Riverside who had growing concerns about local military families in the early 1950s founded the Family Service Association. Since then, it has grown to be one of the largest multiservice nonprofits in the Inland Empire.

With services for people from infants to older adults, Family Service Association has addressed poverty, hunger and health in families and underserved communities. Through early education, mental health services, senior housing, support for homebound people, senior and community centers and meals for seniors, Family Service Association’s team members serve more than 13,000 people each year, according to the news release.
