UCLA women fall at Oregon State on buzzer-beater

Talia von Oelhoffen made a 3-pointer from the top of the key at the buzzer to lift No. 11 Oregon State to a 79-77 victory over No. 9 UCLA on Friday night.

After an official’s review, the basket counted and the Beavers (21-3, 10-3 Pac-12) had their sixth straight win.

Oregon State rallied from seven points down in the final three minutes. Von Oelhoffen finished with 22 points, including six 3-pointers, and Timea Gardiner had a career-high 21 points.

Lauren Betts scored a career-high 24 points to lead UCLA (19-5, 8-5).

The Bruins appeared to have won the game when Betts connected on a 15-foot jumper with 1.1 seconds left for a 77-76 lead. Betts received the ball just left of the free throw line and drilled the unconteste­d jumper.

But Oregon State had one final opportunit­y and converted. The near sell-out crowd at Gill Coliseum erupted into a frenzy when von Oelhoffen hit the long jumper.

NO. 10 USC 88, OREGON 51 >> JuJu Watkins scored 33 points leading the Trojans’ rout in Eugene on Friday night for their fifth consecutiv­e victory.

Watkins made 12 of 25 shots from the field, including 3 of 8 on 3-pointers, despite leaving the game for a while in the third quarter due to injury. She also made six of seven free throws and had eight rebounds for USC (19-4, 9-4 Pac-12).

McKenzie Forbes added 12 points for USC. Kaitlyn Davis had 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Chance Gray scored 12 to lead the Ducks (11-15, 2-11), who have lost eight straight games — seven against ranked teams.

NO. 3 STANFORD 84, CAL 49 >> Kiki Iriafen had 23 points and 11 rebounds, powering a balanced attack for the Cardinal’s 11th straight victory in the Bay Area rivalry.

Cameron Brink contribute­d 14 points and the nation’s leader in blocked shots had four more for Stanford (23-3, 12-2 Pac-12).

NO. 22 UTAH 77, NO. 8 COLORADO 76 >> Dasia Young scored 13 points and made a driving layup at the buzzer in her return after missing four games with a concussion, to lift the Utes at home.

Alissa Pili scored 18 points to lead Utah (19-7, 9-5 Pac-12).

Jaylyn Sherrod scored 15 points and Frida Formann had 10 of her 15 points in the fourth quarter as the Buffaloes (20-5, 10-4) forced seven turnovers in the fourth quarter to turn the game into a thriller.

Men's highlights

Jordan Wright had 14 points including two free throws with five seconds left as visiting LSU erased a 16-point second half deficit to beat No. 11 South Carolina 64-63 on Saturday.

The Tigers (13-12, 5-7 Southeaste­rn Conference) trailed 41-25 after Zachary Davis’ 3 pointer with 16:58 to play. That’s when LSU found its offensive flow.

South Carolina (21-5, 9-4) had a final chance, but Jacobi Wright’s 3-pointer from the left corner hit off the rim and bounced away.

LSU players jumped and screamed in celebratio­n while the large home crowd stood in shock.

Tyrell Ward led the Tigers with 16 points. Point guard Trae Hannibal, who played two seasons at South Carolina, had a game-high 12 rebounds.

This one looked over as South Carolina opened the second half with a 9-0 burst for their 16-point lead. Instead, the Gamecocks lost two in a row for the first time this season.

B.J. Mack had 18 points and nine rebounds to lead South Carolina.

NO. 1 UCONN 81, NO. 4 MARQUETTE 53 >> Donovan Clingan had 17 points and 10 rebounds to help the host Huskies rout the Golden Eagles and take control of the race for the Big East regular-season title.

Tristen Newton added 15 points, eight rebounds and eight assists for the Huskies (24-2, 14-1), who have won 14 straight games. Cam Spencer and Hassan Diarra each added 14 points.

Kam Jones scored 15 points and Oso Ighodaro had 14 for Marquette (19-6, 10-4), which came into the game with an eight-game winning streak.

The Huskies now lead the secondplac­e Golden Eagles in the Big East by three games in the loss column with five to play.

NO. 6 KANSAS 67, NO. 25 OKLAHOMA 57 >> Hunter Dickinson had 20 points and 16 rebounds and the visiting Jayhawks rallied to beat the Sooners. Dickinson, a 7-foot-2 center, had 24 points and 14 rebounds in the first matchup between the teams — a 7866 win at home on Jan. 13.

Johnny Furphy had 15 points, nine rebounds and three steals for the Jayhawks (20-6, 8-5 Big 12).

Jalon Moore had 17 points and Javian McCollum added 15 for the Sooners (18-8, 6-7).

NO. 9 DUKE 76, FLORIDA STATE 67 >>

Jared McCain set a Duke freshman record with eight 3-pointers and matched a school freshman mark with 35 points as the visiting Blue Devils beat the Seminoles.

McCain hit seven 3-pointers in the first half and shot 60% overall (12 for 20), including 8 for 11 from long distance.

Jeremy Roach scored 15 points as Duke (20-5, 11-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) won its fourth straight game.

Jamir Watkins scored 15 points for Florida State (13-12, 7-7).

SAN DIEGO STATE 81, NEW MEXICO 70 >>

Jaedon LeDee scored 23 points and Lamont Butler had 13 points and three steals to lead the Aztecs at home on Friday night. LeDee made 7 of 10 shots with a 3-pointer and 8 of 11 free throws, adding four steals for San Diego State (20-6, 9-4 Mountain West Conference).

Jaelen House had 22 points and four steals for the Lobos (20-6, 8-5) and Donovan Dent added 11 points.
