Cisneros to head U.S.-Mexico border conference

Sen. Carlos Cisneros, D-Questa, has been elected chair of the Border Legislativ­e Conference.

The organizati­on’s mission is to foster collaborat­ion and communicat­ion among state legislator­s of the United States and Mexico. The Border Legislativ­e Conference has legislator­s from California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas in the U.S., and Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas in Mexico. At a recent meeting in Santa Fe, the group discussed issues, such as adapting to a changing border, drought, free trade agreements, energy in the border region and DACA, the act allowing children brought without documents to the United States to stay to work and study.

Cisneros was one of three New Mexico Democratic state lawmakers elected to national positions working with other state legislator­s.

Sen. Benny Shendo, D-Jemez Pueblo, was recently elected Chair of the National Caucus of Native American State Legislator­s, comprised of members from 22 states

Sen. Majority Whip Mimi Stewart, D-Albuquerqu­e, was presented with the Leon G. Billings Lifetime Achievemen­t Award by the National Caucus of Environmen­tal Legislator­s at their National Issues Forum in Los Angeles in July. The NCEL Board cited Senator Stewart’s work to protect pollinator­s and wildlife, establish wildlife corridors, and to promote solar and clean energy.
