Cisneros to head U.S.-Mexico border conference
Sen. Carlos Cisneros, D-Questa, has been elected chair of the Border Legislative Conference.
The organization’s mission is to foster collaboration and communication among state legislators of the United States and Mexico. The Border Legislative Conference has legislators from California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas in the U.S., and Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas in Mexico. At a recent meeting in Santa Fe, the group discussed issues, such as adapting to a changing border, drought, free trade agreements, energy in the border region and DACA, the act allowing children brought without documents to the United States to stay to work and study.
Cisneros was one of three New Mexico Democratic state lawmakers elected to national positions working with other state legislators.

Sen. Majority Whip Mimi Stewart, D-Albuquerque, was presented with the Leon G. Billings Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Caucus of Environmental Legislators at their National Issues Forum in Los Angeles in July. The NCEL Board cited Senator Stewart’s work to protect pollinators and wildlife, establish wildlife corridors, and to promote solar and clean energy.
