Save the UNM Ski Team

-

To Whom It May Concern:

The University of New Mexico Ski Team has been a top athletic and academic team since the 1970s. In addition to getting a sound education, students have participated in highly competitive intercollegiate competitions, earning numerous titles and championships.

Tireless dedication and countless hours of training by students and coaches have not only benefited the university but also New Mexico’s ski areas, which have become magnets for both locals and tourists. Today, as in years past, the UNM Ski Team is ready to perform and represent the excellence of UNM and the beauty of our state.

Skiing is a big industry in New Mexico and a large part of the economy. Small businesses, such as hotels, restaurants, galleries and gift shops have benefited from the tourists who visit our ski resorts and surrounding communities. Ski industries have invested money and manpower to improve and revitalize our communities, turning several into world-class ski destinations, sustainable not only during the winter months but year-round.

The loss of the UNM Ski Team is a not only a tragedy to the students who are seeking a higher education, but also to our ski industry and our worldwide reputation as a recreational destination. As New Mexico and its residents are trying to recover from financial hardships, now is not the time to cut back on tourism and local spending.

However, some good can come from this decision. As New Mexicans, we can work together to reinstate and support the UNM Ski Team. Through collaboration with vested parties, UNM, the legislature and community support, we can explore solutions to overcome the financial obstacles and find a longterm fix.

Sincerely,
