Fashion takes the stage for Big Brothers, Big Sisters
Three top female fashion designers from Taos adorned local models with their latest works and sold them at discount prices later to raise funds for Big Brothers, Big Sisters at Taos Country Club Saturday (Sept. 1).
The nonprofit Big Brothers, Big Sisters helps match youth with adult mentors. Mentors don’t need special skills, just a desire to spend time with and be a friend to young people, said Karen Koyote, regional director for the organization’s mountain region.
“Research has shown positive relationships between adult mentors and at-risk children have a direct and measurable impact on children’s lives,” said a statement from Big Brothers, Big Sisters. “Youth in the program perform better in school, get along better with their families and are less likely to use drugs or alcohol.”
The featured designers were Patricia Michaels, who brought some of the pieces she had managed to salvage after a flood destroyed her Santa Fe studio and much of her work; Trish Sereda, who developed Hotskins Bodywear and now makes handcrafted leather clothing; and Linda St. Angelo, who creates wearable art pieces from Merino wool roving and woven silk.
Models included Charlotte Keefe, Barbara Crews, Pam Gordon, Dianne Frost, Jessica Sanchez, Nichole Chavez, Sarah Sletten, Linda Moscarella, Stacy Kay Romero, Amy Gonzales, Shay Golden Eagle, Michelle Graziano, Abbie Jackson, Roberta Jones and Juanita Cohn.
