Wildlife Center celebrates open house

The New Mexico Wildlife Center near Española invites the public to an open house Oct. 6 - 7 from 11 a.m. to

3 p.m. for its annual open house. This is an opportunit­y for the public to meet many species of native wildlife up close and enjoy an afternoon of fun designed for all ages.

This year’s event will begin Saturday morning with a special ribbon-cutting dedicating the new home of one of the center’s most beloved Animal Ambassador­s and longtime resident, Sly, a redeared slider turtle. Other attraction­s at the two-day event will include:

• Live animal demonstrat­ions

• Games and activities for all ages

• Wildlife hospital tours ($3 or bring an item from our wish list*)

• Garden tours

• Frito pie fundraiser Although there is no charge for the event, there is a suggested donation of $5 per vehicle. This event is a fundraiser for New Mexico Wildlife Center, a non-profit organizati­on supported entirely through donations and grants. The Wildlife Center rescues and rehabilita­tes wildlife, returning them when healthy to their native habitats. Over the decades, the center has rescued bears, eagles, deer, owls and more.
