Taos Arts Council’s nomination
Since 1974, the Governor’s Awards for Excellence in the Arts have been recognizing those who have made significant contributions to New Mexico as individual artists, as major contributors to the arts or as outstanding corporate supporters of the arts. Statewide nominations are accepted from interested individuals and arts organizations.
And the nomination of Virginia Couse Leavitt as a major contributor to the arts marks the fourth year that the Taos Arts Council has submitted a nomination for this prestigious award.
“This is a critical component of what the Taos Arts Council does,” said Sonya Davis, vice president of the council. “The recognition of our artists and contributors has not only a positive impact on Taos but also on the state as a whole.”
The council’s previous nominations included painters Cliff Harmon and Barbara Sayre Harmon, panoramic photographer Gus Foster and the late modernist sculptor Peter Chinni.
Davis noted that nominations are typically feted at the council’s annual gala, its primary fundraiser, which has been canceled this year due to the coronavirus epidemic. However, the council is moving forward with planning for the upcoming year.
“Our Taos artists banner project, so visible to locals and tourists, was successfully installed this year, and we’re meeting to discuss ways to ensure its continuity.”
