TiLT needs your plastic

- By JESSE MOYA jmoya@taosnews.com

Members of the local nonprofit Taos Initiative for Living Together (also known as TiLT) are asking members of the community for used plastics.

TiLT has been gathering clean plastic from members of the community to build a garden shed in Questa and are in need of more to finish the shed’s walls.

The group is using a metal cage design adapted by Taos architect Doug Eichelberger and stuffing the cages with compressed plastic to serve as insulation. Walls are then coated with chicken wire to help stucco adhere to the finished product.

Each 5-foot section of 1-foot thick wall requires about 24 trash bags of compressed plastic to fill, so the group is always looking for more for this and possible future projects. The project offers one of the only a few alternatives for plastic recycling in Taos since the Taos Recycling Center stopped accepting the material last year.

Plastic must be rinsed clean, free of any food or liquid remnants. TiLT is asking donations to have the caps removed from the bottles. Milk and juice cartons are not considered reusable in this instance.
