Angel Fire’s MEGA event

-

There’s still time to train for and enter the ruggedly challenging Master of the Mountains near Ratón. At the moment, the race – in which contestants run, paddle, bike and use a shotgun – is still taking place Sept. 12.

If you want some swag for your efforts, you must register by Aug. 15. The last day to register is Sept. 6.

The even starts with a 6-mile trail run through the rugged terrain of Sugarite Canyon State Park in northeastern New Mexico, followed by a 3-mile paddle over a course on Lake Maloya at 7,500 feet and then a 22-mile bike ride through the high plains along the Santa Fe Trail.

Finally, you end by proving your prowess on a challenging shotgun shooting course. The event is hosted by the city of Ratón Department of Parks and Recreation.

If you do enter, be sure and practice, especially with the shotgun. The first day of the race is certainly not the first time you should handle the gun you bring, organizers say. The range master can disqualify anyone they consider unsafe.

Possible race divisions include: solo female -39 and solo female 40+; solo male -39 and solo male 40+; 2-4 person relay team men, 2-4 person relay team women and 2-4 person relay team coed.

Go to ratonmom.com for more information, course maps and to register.

At the moment, Angel Fire’s big mountain bike team trail party is still on for end of August at the resort’s mountain bike park.

The events are scheduled from Aug. 28-29, with a bike race, Enduro, Make Enduro Great Again and Team Trail Party.

The events feature 100 percent lift access and riders can do the stages in whatever order they choose.

Editor’s note: Events could change or be canceled depending on state health orders related to the novel coronavirus pandemic. Check with race organizers before registering.
