Humble plea to end Trump fearmongering

- By Andres S. Vargas Andres S. Vargas is a former Taos County probate judge who lives in El Prado.

In “Children of the Days: A Calendar of Human History,” Eduardo Galeano wrote: “On Oct. 30, 1938, Orson Wells invented the extraterrestrial invasion and broadcast it over the radio. The invasion was a lie, but the fear was real. And the fear continued: Martians, turned Russians, Koreans, Vietnamese, Cubans, Nicaraguans, Afghanis, Iraqis, Iranians …”

President Trump, a pathological liar (to date 20,000 lies and misrepresentations – The Washington Post) daily, falsely repeats the lie that a vote for the Democrats and Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will destroy our America – being overrun by mobs, terrorists and BLM anarchists.

Trump has expanded his list to include Muslims, Communists, Socialists and [an] “invasion” by caravans of mostly women and children from “shithole countries,” rather than Trump’s preferred whites from countries like

Norway. Included in his list of undesirables are those from El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras and Guatemala, and lest we forget, Mexico who is sending its criminals and rapists, trudging thousands of dangerous miles to reach the land of the free and the brave, where they are labeled criminals and separated from their children and put in metal cages and many are deported without due process of law.

Like all refugees they are fleeing for their lives to escape the unrelenting terror, hunger, fallow fields, physical and mental abuse leashed upon them with impunity by gangs and the refusal of their governments, and ours, to prevent paramilitary criminals from killing them, so they flee to the supposed safety of America.

His daily fearmongering perpetuates the myth that people of color are destroying White America, [failing] to mention that what has made America the greatest refuge for the oppressed of the world is acceptance of all peoples who merely seek a better life here.

But this, after all, is nothing new. It is the same fear that our government used to justify slavery, decimation of the Indians and enactment of acts excluding Chinese, the imprisonment of Japanese Americans, as well as the deportation of Mexican Americans to Mexico by President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s Operation Wetback, the invasion of Puerto Rico, Guantanamo, Hawaii, the Philippines, Granada, Panama, Iraq, Afghanistan and the continual threat to invade Venezuela, etc. – plus the support and defense of dictators like Putin, Kim Jong Un, Duterte, and the continued military and moral support of Saudi Arabia justifying the genocide of Yemenis by identifying targets for them to bomb.

The real fear is the unimaginable consequences wrought by the continued Trump presidency.
