Visual arts calendar: What’s happening where
‘Stripes – for Agnes’
An exhibit of contemporary paintings by Taos artist Norbert Voelkel is on view at the Bareiss Gallery, 15 Route 150, through Sunday (Oct. 18). Voelkel’s series “Stripes – for Agnes” is a tribute to Agnes Martin, whose minimalist work dominates a room in the Harwood Museum. Voelkel notes, “The jumping off point is Agnes Martin’s stripe paintings; this exhibition shows an evolution and the variations around the topic of ‘stripes.’ “For the greater context of the theme of stripes, he suggests, see
the work of Paul Klee, Sean Scully and Gerhard Richter. Social Distancing, face masks and current pandemic regulations apply. Call the gallery at (575) 770-2157.
More artists emerge at Bareiss Gallery
“Art in this Time: Six artists explore their worlds in isolation” opens Oct. 22 and over the subsequent weekend at the Bareiss Gallery. Jane Ellen Burke, Dora Dillistone, TJ Mabrey, Robert Parker, Jameson Wells and Barbara Zaring demonstrate new work during this time of chaos and isolation. The gallery is located at 15 State Road 150; the work will be on view ThursdaySaturday, from 1 to 5 p.m.
‘Reimagined’ totems at Hotel Willa
The Casetta Group and The Paseo Project have partnered for another creative venture: the totem poles that were a distinctive aspect of the old Indian Hills exterior, at 233 Paseo del Pueblo Sur. “The totems are all being removed before Thanksgiving, to be ‘reimagined’ by contemporary Taos artists,” said Nova Sheppard, Hotel Willa’s general manager. “It’s not a call for artists, per se,” said Paseo’s Matt Thomas, “but Paseo is seeking creative carvers out there.” Contact paseo@paseoproject.org.
