Put your creative on

Make a mask from whatever materials you have in the house

- BY TWIRL STAFF

COVER YOUR FACE and uncover your creativity! Calling creatives of all ages: We want your art masks.

It’s the season for costumes and masks and making. Instead of our usual Halloween festivities, we are excited to launch a fun creative project called the Mask Gathering at twirltaos.org/ mask-gathering. We invite you all to participate by making a creative mask of your own and sharing it with us.

As always at Twirl, we encourage making art from all kinds of different materials. Just look around the house or in the recycling bin. Is there anything you can use? A milk jug or a cereal box can make a great base for a mask (see images).

But you can also make a mask from clay, cloth, wood or metal if that’s what moves you. If you need inspiration, go to twirltaos.org/explorations/maker and watch some fun videos with ideas on how to make masks using different materials.

Once you have made your mask, we hope that you will share your creation for the Mask Gathering. There are two ways to do this: 1 You can submit a picture of you in your finished mask for the Mask Gathering virtual gallery (view it at twirltaos.org/gallery). Email images to anais@twirltaos.org, but make sure if you’re sending it from your phone, you send it at actual size 2 (at least 1M).

A selection of masks will be physically displayed in downtown Taos in windows for drive-/walk-by viewing in the spring of 2021. You can submit your mask in-person at Twirl Too, Tuesday - Saturday, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. or email nina@twirltaos.org for details.

This exhibition is open to artists of all ages. Deadline for submission: Dec. 18. Have fun and get creative. We can’t wait to see what you make.

No explicit material accepted. Keep in mind that these masks will be viewed by people of all ages. Twirl reserves the right to show only work that we deem suitable for the general public. If your piece is falling apart we will not be able to display it. If your photo is not high enough quality, we will not be able to display it.

If you are a teacher or parent, visit twirltaos.org/explorations to learn how you can explore masks, past and present, with your student/child, to provide some positivity, creativity, fun and learning around our current reality. We have created five different pathways with videos and extension activities including cultural, maker, theatrical, practical and social emotional explorations of masks.

Our objective is to inspire and connect with our community, and to show the wealth of creativity that resides in Taos and beyond. Join the Mask Gathering!

This project was generously supported by the Taos Community Foundation.
