‘Creation is pure freedom.’
— Taos Modern Beatrice Mandelman, at 203 Fine Art
NEW MEXICO PBS recently brought one of Taos’ most well-known artists to life in a one-hour documentary about painter Bea Mandelman.
An intimate portrait of Mandelman, the story was illustrated with the artist’s lifelong collection of artworks and personal photographs, along with the private journals that she kept throughout her life, and a candid radio interview produced by Phaedra Greenwood in 1995.
Her unmistakable visual voice, complemented by her writings, gave the viewer more insight into Mandelman’s creative process.
NOW, 203 FINE ART presents Beatrice Mandelman (1912-1998): Select Works on Paper & Collage, from the Archives. This exhibition features select pieces recently pulled from the archives of the Mandelman estate collection, preserved in custom shadowbox frames. Each piece is float-mounted, accentuating the carefully crafted surfaces and textures from edge to edge.
203 invites you to visit the gallery to view these masterful works on paper by Mandelman. Collage was integral to her practice, having stated, “collage best represents my concern for the stressful, shifting, transitory nature of human experience.” These pieces, made between the 1950s and 1980s, are expressive of that sentiment and seem to encapsulate 2020.
203 Fine Art presents this exhibition throughout the holiday season, into the New Year. The gallery is located at 1335 Gusdorf Road, Unit 1, in Taos. Call (575) 751-1262.
