A return to light

- BY KARIN MOULTON ject.org/steam.

HAVE YOU NOTICED how sunlight forms a star when it hits a reflective surface? Or how you can see each of the colors in a rainbow? How about when a drop of water magnifies an object? Light is all around us and brings us all the colors we see. During the holiday season and throughout the year, light symbolizes new beginnings, renewal and growth.

On Thursday (Dec. 17), community scientific concepts about light through members and partners celebrated the a short video and follow up game. Then spirit of light during the holidays with viewers were encouraged to use matePaseo’s launch of our virtual youth rials around their homes to explore STEAM education program. Online participants for “Creating

Art with Light” explored some of the

STEAM.

Paseo Project’s education program is offering this workshop as an interactive Google Classroom in many of our local schools. The curriculum can be synchronous or asynchronous, depending on the need of the teachers and students. Students get to meet the

artist virtually and receive their support in creating their projects. Working with other Paseo artists, we will be creating and publishing additional STEAM curriculum and workshops throughout the year. Projects will be shared with the community through STEAM Nights and on our website, as well as in local schools. Completed projects will be displayed in a gallery on the Paseo website.

STEAM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. Traditionally, art and science have been treated as two separate disciplines, but when they are studied together it’s clear to see the impact one has on the other. A great deal of creativity is required to make scientific as well as engineering breakthroughs, and art is just as often an expression of (or a product of) scientific knowledge. Art and science, together with engineering, technology, and math, help us interpret, study and explore the world around us. From public art installations to pop ups to this year’s “Capsule” interactive art installation, Paseo embodies this STEAM principle.

The Paseo Project is dedicated to bringing the art of installation, performance and projection to Taos. The Paseo works with community partners to provide educational programming built around local and visiting PASEO artists. From in-school demos for young people to virtual online events, The Paseo Project’s education programs expose members of our community to 21st century skills, contemporary art practices, and exciting new ways to engage with the world. We have always worked with the wonderful people at Twirl to bring our programs to life, and are excited to contribute to At Home with Twirl and Friends and offer this fun STEAM activity you can enjoy over the winter break. We’ve all learned a lot this year, and it’s clear that Art Cannot Be Cancelled, so let us know how your light projects go!

Coming up next is an exciting project using coding to create art with Nina Lutz. Nina is a graduate student at MIT Media Lab and loves interfaces and tools that are empowering. She uses computation to tell stories and intersect identity and aesthetics in the technological world in which we live. Through collaboration with local math teachers, Nina will bring high school geometry concepts alive with movement and color.
