Cloud seeding is the last thing we need

- By Mike Davis Mike Davis lives in Taos County and is a member of Taos Water Protectors.

Especially during the COVID19 pandemic, the last thing we need is cloud seeding in Taos County.

To all residents of Taos county and beyond: After reading Rick Romancito‘s crucial article in last week‘s paper, I wrote this statement on behalf of protecting the people and the natural environment here in Taos valley from the dangerously harmful consequences of the current proposal for cloud seeding in New Mexico. This latest weather modification project is advertised to bring more moisture to the region. This involves the use of toxic chemicals which are burned and go up into the clouds where they bind with the water molecules and then fall on us all below in the rain and snow, which carries the harmful chemicals to the rivers and lakes and streams.

This can cause all kinds of longterm health problems, especially respiratory system issues, as the chemicals get into the rivers and fish and into the food chain.

We are still in the middle of a health crisis in this country and globally—and it is killing people because they cannot breathe. Supply of medical resources is already strained. So why would we blast atomized particles into the air which are known to cause respiratory distress? The crystallized silver iodide in cloud seeding has been documented to cause health problems in aquatic life, and many people eat the fish from the rivers and lakes here.

This human arrogance, that thinks it can improve upon the miraculous forces of nature, which give life to all beings through the infinitely complex interconnectedness of relationships in the sacred circle/web of life of all of mother nature for millions and billions of years and beyond, is absurd. Yet the modern human legacy of manipulation and exploitation of the natural world for our short term/shortsighted profit ambitions has brought us to this emergency point environmentally all over the globe. And that the desire for more snowpack at ski resorts is motivation to some to actually use toxic cloud seeding at the health risk of us all is insane. This is some mad scientist scenario.

Sisters and brothers: It’s not too late to protect our community from this latest environmental threat. We can stop this cloud seeding project if we stand together and make our voices heard. Let’s keep Taos Valley pristine and protect everyone’s long-term health by stopping this proposed weather modification project here in New Mexico.

We can also create legal protections by together collectively uniting to give the water a voice through legal standing, like the

Maori nation did for all of New Zealand, where if the water is threatened or polluted, legal action can be taken on behalf of the water to hold those polluters accountable.

Thank you Rick Romancito for your so important article regarding this crucial matter for our community.

As Rick’s article ended with how to make our voices heard, I will repeat this info: Send your feedback to ATTN: weather control committee, NMISC, PO Box 25102, Santa Fe, NM 87504-5102. Include your full name, phone number, email address, and mailing address. You can also call 505827-4130 to the office of Christina Noftsker.
