Lucky Corridor is sure to produce problems

- By Robert Knudson Dr. Robert Knudson lives in Taos.

Lucky Corridor, a subsidiary of Ameren Corporation, has plans for a 345 kilowatt electric power line with 14-story-tall (150-foot) towers from Springer, Angel Fire, Taos Canyon, through Taos, then on to California, 1,000 miles away. This would use the present 115 KW corridor, with 75-foot poles, which passes through residential and business areas including churches in Taos. A large wind farm is proposed for eastern NM as the supply point.

There are many reasons to deny this plan, including the following;

A huge permanent visual scar would be a detriment to our tourism-based economy, as well as decreasing property values.

None of this electricity will be provided to Taos or other NM communities. Aside from a small number of temporary jobs erecting the 150-foot towers, no economic benefits will occur here.

Fire danger and possible electrocution of humans, pets and livestock from downed power lines may occur. High winds, snow and ice-coated lines are real threats. Recall the recent tragedies of massive destruction and many deaths in California due to transmission-line failures.

Noise pollution with chronic crackling and buzzing noise.

Biologic effects from EMF force fields (electromagnetic fields).

High voltage power lines produce a constant 600-1,000-foot tunnel force field along the entire path of the transmission lines. That is two to three football fields wide and high, affecting any and all living creatures with electrical and magnetic forces. Proximity and length of time of exposure are factors in probable and possible damaging effects to cells, tissues, organs and the full human, animal, bird or insect.

There are many studies ongoing, and in the past, citing changes to living organisms that give serious reasons to keep high power lines away from populated areas, as well as dangers from downed lines. The transmission line industry cites their studies reveal no scientific evidence of harm, but cannot prove there is no harm or danger. The studies that do show harm to humans are many, and continuing. Recall that it took about 40 years for factual proof to show that cigarette smoking actually caused lung and throat cancer, emphysema and heart damage. Prudence and common sense lead to say NO to

Lucky Corridor for Taos. Perhaps California might look to adjusting its opportunities to harness their sunshine, nuclear, natural gas and wind to meet its needs, and leave New Mexico (low hanging fruit?) and Taos alone.

Permits for LC [Lucky Corridor] will be denied or granted by the US Forest Service, BLM, Public Regulatory Commission, Town and County of Taos, and NM state politicians. Make your voice heard to keep this project from coming to fruition. Kit Carson Electric Co-op has long supplied and maintained excellent electric service to the Taos area, and LC will bring only visual, fire and health issues. I doubt that any manager, owner or employee of LC or Ameren Corporation lives beneath high voltage power lines.
