- By JEANS PINEDA jpineda@taosnews.com

Since their last home game on March 21, the Taos Tigers (6-8) have gotten mixed results.

On Tuesday (March 29), the Tigers suffered their third loss by one run of the season to the Robertson Cardinals when they lost 8-9.

And on Monday (March 28), the Tigers lost against the Capital Jaguars in a game that was neck and neck after five innings. Capital capitalized on their aggressive base running to get runners into scoring position. Outfielder Francisco Diaz stole four bases, while the team as a whole swiped 12 for the game.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Jaguars batted in seven runs, giving them a safe 16-7 cushion in the top of seventh. Taos was unable to score and dropped to 6-7 for the season.

On Saturday (March 26), Taos finished the tourney with a thriller that had to be decided in extra innings versus the West Las Vegas Dons.

Dons pitcher Gene Gonzalez allowed four runs in two-thirds of an inning, leaving him with a 42.00 earned run average. The Tigers jumped out in front with a 4-0 lead. West Las Vegas clawed away at the lead by scoring two runs at a time between the third, fourth and sixth inning. Taos eked out single runs between the second, fourth and fifth inning.

After six innings of baseball the game was still tied 7-7. In the ninth inning, the Tigers pulled away, scoring two runs to make it 9-7.

The Dons brought it within one run in the bottom of the ninth but couldn’t force a tenth inning.

The timely Hunter Tafoya gets his third win (3-0) of the season as a relief pitcher. Michael Cruz threw 108 pitches in his start.

On Friday (March 25), the Tigers bounced back from their loss in the previous game to beat the Tucumcari Rattlers, 10-8, in their second game of the tournament .

A day earlier, Taos traveled to Las Vegas for the West Las Vegas Tourney.

The Tigers put themselves in a great position to win their first game of the tournament against Robertson. Jalen Montano racked up a high pitch count of 120 pitches. Montana was effective through six innings, shutting out the Cardinals. The Tigers held a three-run lead. Robertson scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to win the ball game. Relief pitcher Anthony Martinez was credited with the loss, while the aptly named closer for the Cardinals, Ace Gonzalez, got the save.
