Northern New Mexico College offers free carpentry program
A free carpentry camp is now available through Northern New Mexico College (NNMC) at their Española campus. The program is tailored to help unemployed workers gain the foundational skills necessary to enter the trade. The first weekday session will be Monday (April 4).
According to a press release, the program offers “40 hours of in-person and online classes — including hands-on training. Participants will learn basic carpentry skills, become OSHA 10 safety certified and receive coaching to determine their pathway to a career in carpentry.”
Participants must be 18 and older, show proof of COVID-19 vaccination and must be available to begin employment after completion of the camp, which has been organized through a partnership between the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions and the Southwest Regional Council of Carpenters.
Cecilia Romero, NNMC continuing education coordinator, helped start a free welding camp that began Feb. 28 and will end in late May. Romero said that she saw there is already a waiting list due to the significant demand for placement in the program.
“I have a waiting list of probably about 30 people that I just couldn’t take. Unfortunately, I couldn’t take them all. So I’m hoping to get another grant,” said Romero. “They’re free classes for anyone that’s been unemployed. I think this is a great opportunity for them. Really. We’ve gotten the unions involved in this as well… So they’re ready to hire as well.”
