Peñasco advances to track and field championships
On Saturday (April 30), the Peñasco Panthers and Lady Panthers hosted the district 5-2A track and field meet. According to the NMACT, “the first two ... places in individual events and the first- and second-place teams in each relay event advance to the State Championships.” The 2A State Track and Field Championships will be held in Albuquerque on Friday (May 6).
The following Peñasco athletes will advance to the state championships due to a first or second place finish at the Peñasco district meet.
• Nehemiah Romero will head to states (19:22) in the 110-meter hurdles.
• Elijah Lucero in the discus throw 109'9".
• Gilly Valdez and Jude Martinez were shoo-ins for the long distance races as they typically end up first and second, respectively, at most track meets this season, and had previously posted state-qualifying times.
• Jeremiah Martinez will head to states in the 800-meter race with a second place finish behind Valdez.
• Sylvia Brown will head to states in the shot put.
• Charnelle Gonzalez and Rochelle Lopez will head to states in the 1,600-meter race and in the 3,200-meter race. Gonzalez will also head to states in the 800 meter run.
• The Peñasco girls relay team will head to states in the 1,600meter relay race, 1,600-meter medley race and in the 3,200meter relay race.
The following Questa athletes will head to states based on their performance at the Peñasco district track meet.
• Tate Danis will head to states in the high jump. Antonio Romero and Marcos Gonzalez will head to states in the triple jump.
• The Questa boys relay
team will head to states in the 1,600-medley relay.
• Angelica Lovato will head to states in the shot put and in the discus throw.
• Aliyah Santiestevan will head to states in the javelin throw.
• Alyse Lovato will head to states in the long jump, high jump, and triple jump.
• Karina Rael and Ariana Medina will head to states in the pole vault.
The Questa girls relay team will head to states in the 400meter relay race and 800-meter relay race.
