Governor visits Enos Garcia for Teacher Appreciation Week
Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham surprised staff and teachers at Enos Garcia Elementary School in Taos Thursday morning (May 5) in a show of support during Teacher Appreciation Week.
With donuts in tow, the governor entered several classrooms, talking with each group of students about teacher appreciation and the role of the governor.
Before entering the classrooms, the governor met with school staff, including Principal Sarah Bradley and Taos Municipal Schools Superintendent Dr. Lillian Torrez, among others.
Bradley let the governor make a special announcement over the school intercom system for their “Thrilling Thursday” announcement, in which she thanked teachers and students for their hard work. “Thank you for being a great school… Go Tiger cubs!” she said, ending the announcement.
While visiting classrooms, the governor met 1st and 3rd grade teachers and students, delivering donuts to each room and talking with the students about their goals and discussing the role of the governor.
When asking students if they wanted to be governor, one firstgrader raised her hand and said she would run for the office so she could “make the world a better place.”
“Then you should be president!” responded Lujan Grisham.
Another student said if they were governor, they would try to stop war. “Most of the governors in the country are very upset about what’s happening around
the world, and we are all standing up for Ukraine,” responded Lujan Grisham. “No one [should] fight with anyone else.”
“I want to be a governor and a doctor,” said another student. “You can be both,” the governor
responded. “You and anyone else can do anything you want to do. I, myself, am a lawyer and a governor.”
After the visit, superintendent Torrez said “the kids were thrilled, they were so excited, and so was the staff, to have the governor recognize each teacher and go into the classrooms and just be authentic and really, she loves children, she wants to do the best for education in New Mexico.
“We’re doing everything that we can at Taos Municipal Schools to provide excellent education. And it’s our educators, our teachers that are making it happen,” Torrez said.
