Taking it to the streets
Roots: Wise Fool New Mexico’s Spring Cabaret and Street Fair this weekend
ROOTS: WISE FOOL New Mexico’s Spring Cabaret and Street Fair with “stunning circus performances in stilt walking, aerial acrobatics and much more” is happening this weekend May 28 at 6 p.m. and Sunday May 29 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the Wise Fool New Mexico Studio, 1131 Siler Road Suite B in Santa Fe. It’s well worth the trip down from Taos — and it’s free.
Circus Street Fair is a community gathering in celebration of Wise Fool’s 22 years as a vital part of Northern New Mexico’s Art scene. The street fair will be a fun community event with circus activities, a raffle and community circus. There will be activity booths and circus performances in the street, ambient performances and aerial acrobatics on an aerial rig, and it’s all family friendly.
Wise Fool New Mexico is a nonprofit theatre arts project created by local women artists who have a passion for creating the world we envision through the arts. It is WFNM’s mission to ignite imagination, build community, and promote social justice through performances and hands-on experiences in the arts of circus, puppetry, and theatre. At Wise Fool NM We Lift Each Other Up, and for 22 years, Wise Fool has been making large statements on the streets with giant puppets, creating straw bale circuses, sharing professional shows and cabarets and gathering in community.
During two Cabaret performances, kids from WFNM’s student body will be sharing the work they created throughout the Spring session. Sunday’s show will also have a virtual viewing option.
Performers in this street extravaganza include Lisa Bartley, who began her circus journey at Wise Fool 13 years ago and has participated in adult programs and classes, both as a student and as a coach. She said she loves to see students challenge themselves in her classes in aerials, flexibility and conditioning.
Ari Bair has been training and learning at Wise Fool since they were eight years old. Now they are a member of Wise Fool’s Teen Troupe and an assistant coach. Ari is also a visual artist and a junior at Mandela International School.
