The Taos News

At the heart of the community

- By Dena Miller

There is big news happening in the middle of town. “Taos Retirement Village is now known as Taos Enchanted Village and we’re excited to unveil to the community, not just the new name, but also the many innovations that are happening here,” said both Executive Director Billie Odum and Emily Lee, the village’s Sales and Marketing Director.

Look for the redesigned logo and new website and, most important, the inspired new vision for the six-acre property, one that will truly check all the boxes of what anyone could want or need in a residential community.

The 58 pet-friendly apartments and casitas are being renovated as vacancies occur, preserving the unique personalities of each. “Our residences are not institutional or ‘cookie cutter,’” emphasized Lee. A much-needed facelift of The Bistro, including the removal and refurbishment of the community library, has transformed the center into a beautiful venue that can be enjoyed by all, whether as a spot for community events or a place for locals to host private celebrations. Another multi-purpose area, the Piano Room, has likewise been updated and will once again come alive with a stellar lineup of live music performances.

“We would encourage anyone needing a space for their own event, or for any local organization who wants a convenient and comfortable meeting place with plenty of on-site parking, to contact us and inquire about the rooms,” Lee continued, noting that community engagement is reciprocal. “We’re also planning many more trips to get our residents out to enjoy what’s happening in the venues here.”

And there is this to consider: location, location, location. Sunset Park is a next-door neighbor, as is historic Taos Plaza, the town’s library and municipal offices — including police and fire headquarters — and the many restaurants, shops and galleries that give Taos its exceptional character. In fact, Taos Enchanted Village is an ideal multi-generational residential choice, between its walkability and charming neighborhood vibe. “Especially in this tight market, young families and others in search of convenient and safe independent housing should consider our options,” Lee recommended.

Of course, Taos Enchanted Village will continue to provide top-notch support to residents as needs arise. Though every apartment is outfitted with a call button, the privacy of those not requiring assistance is guaranteed. Services such as housekeeping, meal preparation and errand transportation are available on request.

If more care is needed, Odum — who also serves as director of nursing — praised the professional and caring staff working with her to ensure the best available care. “Taos Enchanted Village is dedicated to the physical health of all our residents, in addition to the enrichment of their lives,” she affirmed.

The impetus for the sweeping refurbishment of the village is due to its April 2022 acquisition by Taos Senior Living, LLC, a new family-owned and operated business based in Dallas. For 30 years, their other companies have focused on neglected housing markets, with their ancillary construction company handling the necessary reconstruction and renovation projects. Recently, a long-term family situation had them for the first time looking into assisted and independent care facilities; it was “a calling for them,” Odum said.

“The partners — Tony Pletcher, operations manager; Daniel Lee, chief financial officer; and Bill Janecek, construction manager — ensured a seamless transfer with the prior owners,” she continued. “They have fostered mutual learning about each other, and their sincerity and commitment to the residents and employees of the village are remarkable.” Lee (no relation to the CFO) agreed, noting they have been “super communicative and hands-on, with monthly visits to the property and weekly meetings by phone. They are totally invested in making Taos Enchanted Village a premier residential option for the community.”

Amenities, activities, security and care are the true indicators of a strong community, and Taos Enchanted Village has them all in abundance. Schedule your visit today.
