chance to resume a career that seemingly had been short-circuited in his prime by knee problems.

“I feel good. I feel like the more work, the more at bats I’ve gotten, I feel better,” Sizemore said. “I’m just trying to make the most of the opportunities I get. We have a lot of guys here playing well, so opportunities are limited. I’m trying to stay ready, stay sharp and do what I can when I’m out there.”

The Phils tied the game, 4-4 in the top of the fifth on Chase Utley’s second sac- rifice fly of the day, but Gonzalez gave up a go-ahead single in the fifth, then two runs came across in the sixth against him and Justin De Fratus. The last run scored on a wild pitch by De Fratus, although catcher Wil Nieves recovered the ball quickly, only to find old, plodding plate umpire Bob Davidson standing directly between him and De Fratus covering the plate.

“He was right there,” Nieves said. “We could’ve had him at home, but when I went to throw and (Davidson) was right in the middle, so I tried to throw it (high), but De Fratus said he never saw it.

“The runner was still a good way away from home plate. We could’ve had him. I was like, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me.’”
