Donald Edward Tackett, aged 91, of Audubon, PA, passed away Monday, November 13. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, June, and their four children (Marjory, Jay, Jeff, Jan), as well as eight granddaugh­ters.

One of eight children, Don was born in Bluefield, WV. He served in the Merchant Marine during WWII and graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in naval architectu­re. His thesis on nuclear-powered ships brought him to the attention of the US Navy, who hired him to help create the “nuclear Navy.” His work at the Newport News Shipbuildi­ng company included the creation of the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, the USS Enterprise. His subsequent work at General Electric involved design and maintenanc­e of multiple nuclear power plants in the US and abroad. He helped usher in the era of nuclear energy. He was always most proud of his efforts in ensuring the safety of all his engineerin­g work.

Don was a devout Catholic and attendee at St. Theresa of Avila Church in Audubon. He will be missed by his loving family.

Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation from 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. Monday, November 27, 2017 followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Teresa of Avila Church, 1260 S. Trooper Rd., Norristown, Pa 19403.
