SINGING THEIR PRAISES

Unsung heroes provide boost for team

Sometimes, Lynn Carroll isn’t quite sure how Megan Bealer does it.

There have been too many times to count where the Souderton girls’ basketball coach watches as Bealer, a 5-foot-8 junior guard, emerges from underneath the basket with a rebound she probably had no business getting. On a roster that features 6-foot-2 Kate Connolly, uber-athletic 6-footer Alana Cardona and 5-foot-11 Megan Walbrandt, also a strong athlete, it’s Bealer that leads the Indians in rebounding.

Sure, the junior is a weapon on offense with her long-range shooting but look around at pretty much any successful team and there’s a player like Bealer on their roster. A player who might not lead the team in scoring, but contributes so much that without them, the team’s win total would be reduced.

“She just has a nose for the ball,” Carroll said after Bealer ripped down 11 rebounds against Neumann-Goretti on Jan. 14. “She’s for sure our leading offensive rebounder. She has a nose for the ball, I watch the ball and she isn’t there and the next minute, there she is with the ball in her hands. She’s done that for us for two years now.”

Maybe it was rebounding for her older brother Mike, now a freshman at DeSales, but Bealer’s rebounding prowess is undeniable.

Bealer is far from the only unsung hero on area rosters and like the Souderton guard, many find
