Donald Kimmel of Eagleville
Donald Kimmel, 84, of Eagleville passed away Monday, February 12, 2018 at his residence. He was the beloved husband of Gloria (Huxley) Kimmel to whom he was married for over 40 years.
Born April 17, 1933 in Tamaqua, PA, he was the son of the late Warren and Marjorie (Thrash) Kimmel. Mr. Kimmel was a graduate of Albright College where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in accounting.
Donald Kimmel had an extraordinary commitment to bringing positive change to his community. Mr. Kimmel founded and managed a student loan fund so those without means could gain a higher education. He was awarded the Silver Beaver Award among others for his years of service with the Valley Forge Boy Scouts of America. As a longstanding member of Rotary International he received several awards for his contributions. Donald has been an outstanding contributor to the Elmwood Park Zoo as CPA, Treasurer and past President. He oversaw the revitalization of the Zoo including the construction of the playground and musical instrument garden. As a CPA he volunteered his expertise as a board member of Valley Forge Boy Scouts of America council board, Suburban Mercy General Health Systems trustee and board, Senior Suites Center Board, Suburban Woods Center Board, Montgomery County Development Corporation Board, Lower Providence Zoning and Authority boards, Commercial Club Treasurer, Aero club of PA Board and Past President of Norristown Rotary Club.
Donald Kimmel was an outdoorsman having walked the entire 2,000 mile Appalachian Trail, climbing Mt. Katahdin. Don also climbed Mt. Fuji in Japan, white water rafted the New River, bunji jumped the tallest bridge in New Zealand and has been a small plane pilot since 1961. Don and his wife Gloria traveled the world together and were RV enthusiasts. As an avid gardener he and his wife created beautiful gardens at their home which have been on several garden club tours.
Don was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. Though he will be deeply missed, his compassionate nature and thoughtful guidance has forged a strong family. He lives on through his children and grandchildren.
In addition to his wife Gloria he is survived by his step children James Catania, Caryn Keenan and her husband, John, Laurie Fish and her husband John; his brother Warren Kimmel, Jr.; his grandchildren Abigail Frizzell, Jason Fish, Dylan Fish, Erik Fish, Ryan Keenan, Michael Keenan, Christopher Catania; and one greatgrandchild, Lucas.
Mr. Kimmel was predeceased by his son Thomas Kimmel and his siblings, Earl Kimmel and Robert Kimmel.
Relatives and friends may greet the family from 9-10:45 AM with a memorial service immediately following on Monday, February 19, 2018 at the R. L. Williams, Jr. Funeral Home, Inc. Skippack Pike at Cedars Rd. Skippack. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in his memory to the Elmwood Park Zoo or Rotary International. Interment will be private.
