School district to host Diversity Day

- By Melanie Gogarty, UMAHS Social Studies Teacher For Digital First Media

UPPER MERION » The Diversity Day Committee in conjunction with Community of Caring and the Cultural Heritage Club are working together to prepare Upper Merion’s Diversity Day: Thursday, March 22, 2018. Our keynote speakers will be Sam Drazin, a motivational speaker sharing his experience growing up with Treacher Collins Syndrome—a rare congenital disorder resulting in both facial anomaly and hearing loss, and Asheq Fazlullah with the Delaware Valley Speaker’s Bureau, presenting about what it’s like being a Muslim in America today.

Diversity Day is an allschool event that allows the students of Upper Merion Area High School to learn about other cultures through speakers, activities, food, and fun. After listening to two speakers in the morning, students will have an opportunity to attend classroom activities followed by an exploration of stations throughout the building. Some of the classroom activities and some of the events held during exploration time include: a culture fair, cultural dancing, a coffee house, a French cafe, international board games and sports, senior project applications, and etcetera. The day will conclude with a final assembly.

The theme for this year is Travel. This theme focuses on experiences and struggles Upper Merion Area students and staff have faced around the world. It acknowledges the tremendous changes the world’s population has experienced over the past few decades, as well as those changes that are coming soon. Through Diversity Day, Upper Merion Area School District’s goal of creating a community of caring will be reinforced by raising awareness, by providing new information, and by encouraging student interaction and discussion. The committee welcomes ideas, especially from community members who can offer a service or expertise during this day.

Students may bring money in order to purchase food, cultural items, and raffle tickets. All proceeds will be donated to an organization benefitting hurricane relief in Puerto Rico.
