NORRISTOWN » The Norristown Police Department and the Montgomery County DA’s office have begun a joint investigation into the death of a man and a potential hazardous materials situation reported in the 300 block of East Airy St. Friday Morning.
According to preliminary reports, police and fire crews were called to the scene shortly after 9 a.m. to find the man dead of an apparent drug overdose. During the course of the investigation, officers located items and materials, which resembled what could be construed as equipment used to manufacture methamphetamine.
State Police later determined that was not the case and there was no meth lab present at the location.
Based on police department protocols and in an abundance of caution, the Montgomery County Hazmat unit was alerted and the Pennsylvania State Police Meth Response Team — a squad specifically trained to deal with methamphetamine producing facilities — was notified.
Several residents were reportedly evacuated while crews performed mitigation operations.
The name of the man and details regarding the incident have not yet been released, pending further investigation and notifications.
The Times Herald will update this story as additional information is made available.
