Laurence Gerard McCarthy Sr. of West Norriton, passed away on April 4, 2018. Born on September 15, 1928 in Pottstown, he was the son of the late Grace (nee O’Neill) and Charles McCarthy. Larry graduated from Reading Catholic High. From August 27, 1946 to December 22, 1947, he enlisted in the US Army and served his country in Japan with the occupation forces.

He married Mary Ann O’Dell on July 16, 1949. Together they had four children: Larry Jr. (Jan), James, Michael, and Sue (Ted). He earned his B.S. in Business Administra­tion at Villanova University, matriculat­ing while holding down a full time job and being a loving father and husband. Larry served as lectern and Eucharisti­c Minister. He was an avid fisherman and plane enthusiast, and had a strong interest in WWII history. He loved to read in his spare time and to spend time with his cherished grandchild­ren. Laurence was a member of Visitation BVM, Saint Titus Athletic Club, and the Montgomery County Historical Society.

He is survived by his wife Mollie Bowe-McCarthy, children; Laurence (Jan), James, Michael, and Sue (Ted), grandchild­ren; Kate (Chris), Shannon (Steve), Erin, Kelly, Matthew, and Aly, great-grandchild­ren; James, Michael, Aly, Leo, and Rinde. In addition, he is survived by his brother, David and his step-daughters Julie Morello and Joyce Gadzicki. Laurence was predecease­d by his wife Mary Ann (nee O’Dell) McCarthy in 1990, as well as his siblings Chuck, Mary Lou, and Barbara Ann, and stepson, John Bowe.

He is remembered with love for his humor, kindness, patience and devotion to his family. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Larry’s life on Monday April 9 from 10 – 10:50 AM at Visitation BVM Church, 196 N Trooper Rd in Norristown. Mass will be held at 11 AM at Visitation BVM Church. Interment will take place at St. Aloysius Cemetery in Pottstown.

In lieu of flowers, contributi­ons may be made to the Alzheimer’s Associatio­n.
