Marian Glennie of King of Prussia;

-

There is not enough space on this page to list all of the reasons that Marian (Myers) Glennie will be missed by so many people. She lived to be 96 and passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 9, 2018, at her home of 65 years in King of Prussia, PA.

Marian was born on April 12, 1922, in her parents’ home in the tiny town of Strawbridge, PA, the oldest child of Leon C. and Jane (Holmes) Myers. She graduated from high school at 16 and from Albright College at 20 after earning dual degrees in Chemistry and Biology.

Marian’s professional life began with the WAVES during WWII, stationed at the naval base in Norfolk, VA. After the war, she became a chemist with Dupont in Wilmington, DE, and lived in Philadelphia, PA. There, she caught the eye of a neighbor, Frank B. Glennie, who persuaded her to marry him in 1949. They were blessed with two children, Susan, and then William, just in time for the completion of their modest home in King of Prussia.

Even though she had two young children at home, Marian began the considerable volunteer and charitable work that would be the hallmark of her life. She was a charter member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in King of Prussia, where she was a past president of their Woman’s Club and created Sunday flower arrangements for the church until she was 95. Once a week, Marian drove a child with Brittle Bone Disease and lifted her into her wheelchair, from elementary school until she graduated from Upper Merion High School. She frequently drove a blind Lutheran deaconess to her appointments and also invited her to family meals so that the children would learn from the resilience of this supposedly handicapped woman. For many years, she also read books to the residents of the Norristown State Hospital.

In the years before her husband died in 1975, Marian returned to paid work at the King of Prussia Mall branch of PNC Bank. As as a teller at one of the drive through windows, she so delighted her customers that some would wait in line for her, even when there were other tellers available. Following her work at the bank, she was a clerk at a variety of small gift shops, finally retiring at age 83.

Along the way, she was blessed with five grandchildren. But she suffered the death of her daughter, Susan Jane Martini, in 2000. Susan was living in Kentucky when she fell ill, and to care for her, Marian would make the 10-hour drive, in a single stretch.

Marian loved dogs. There was always one at her side, or under her feet. Her last dog,Tori, was her companion for 15 years of visits to “old people” at nursing homes, where many of the residents were younger than she was. This work earned them top honors from Pals for Life, for whom they made more than 100 visits in a year. She also comforted those at Montgomery Hospice and drove for Meals on Wheels.

“Keep the moving parts moving” was her motto. Marian swam several times a week at the Upper Main Line Y, until she was 93 and required supplemental oxygen. Keeping her mind active was also important, which she did by solving several crossword puzzles every day. She also played bridge frequently and was very competitive at cribbage.

There must be something in the water of Strawbridge that leads to long life, because her brother, Leon Myers, lived until 2012, and she is survived by her sister, Winifred O’Dell of Hughesville. She is also mourned by her son, William Glennie, who now lives in Shanghai, China; her five grandchildren: Kristin, Zack, Alex, Charlotte and Jessica; and four great-grandchildren: Trevor, Lydia, Peter and Hadley; and many other loving friends and family members.

Marian’s viewings will be at The Bacchi Funeral Home & Crematory, Ltd., 805 DeKalb St. (Rt. 202), Bridgeport, PA on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 and Wednesday, both from 6 to 8:00 p.m. Her Memorial Service will be held at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 132 E. Valley Forge Rd., King of Prussia, PA on Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at 11 a.m., with a greeting from 10 to 10:50 a.m. Burial will be in Mount Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Hughesville, PA.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Marian’s memory to Pals for Life, 939 Radnor Rd., Wayne, PA 19087 and/or Meals on Wheels of Upper Merion, 191 Town Center Rd., King of Prussia, PA 19406. Condolences to the family at www.bacchifh. com.
