Free concert at United Church of Christ

Christ United Church of Christ, on the corner of Marshall and Noble Streets in Norristown, will be holding its annual Independence Eve Music Festival on Tuesday July 3rd beginning at 6:30 p.m. This free concert will be featuring the “Song Sheets” with the best of Americana folk, pop and patriotic music. The concert will be held in the church parking lot so please bring a lawn chair. There will be a concession stand to benefit Appalachian Mission Trip.

Veterans Photo ID Discount card event

State Representative Matt Bradford is inviting veterans who reside in Montgomery County to apply for a veterans’ photo ID discount card at his district office in Norristown. Provided through Montgomery County Recorder of Deeds Jeanne Sorg’s office, the card allows veterans who reside in Montgomery County to receive discounts for goods and services from a list of participating merchants in the county. If you are a veteran or know of one in the county, come join us Wednesday, July 11, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at our district office located at 750 E. Johnson Highway in Norristown for this free event.

You must bring your DD214 discharge document and a photo ID (such as a driver’s license) to receive the discount card.

Fireflies: Nature’s Fireworks at NFP

Join a field biologist for an evening to discover the world of fireflies or lightning bugs, which are neither flies nor bugs on Saturday, June 30. Learn about their amazing behavior and life cycle as well as how to distinguish different species of fireflies. The program begins just before dusk and ends just after dusk. Flashlights are optional. Meet in parking lot #3. This free program is appropriate for adults and children 6 and up and beings at 8:30 p.m. Pre-registration is required. Publick reading of Declaration of Independence

A park ranger in period clothing will perform a reading of the Declaration of Independence Sunday, July 1 at 2 p.m. Before the advent of radio and television important government announcements were read to the public in a common square. Come ready to participate in the cheering for Liberty! There will be toasts and musket fire! The reading takes about 90 minutes. Bring a blanket or a folding chair. Meet at the pavilions. In case of rain the event will be moved to the Salt Wing, adjacent to the park office. All ages are welcome to attend this free program. Preregistration is preferred. Free health screenings

Free health screenings at St. Patrick Church hall, DeKalb and Chestnut streets, Norristown, Sunday, July 1 from noon to 3 The faculty and students from St. Joseph’s University Institute for bioethics, the Sisters of Mercy Health Services and many others have been key players in helping our parish with this important outreach as we have expanded the services provided. Several of our own parishioners have been trained as health promoters and do the screening with the help of others. We are continuing to expand the range of services to include referrals to clinics. The goals of this effort are to increase medical knowledge and care, to save lives and to enable better use of hospital resources. The focus is on the underserved populations near us, but we welcome all parishioners to come see what’s happening and see if there may be a role for you.

OLMC Grande Festa Italiana 2018 date set

The annual “Grande Festa Italiana” -- Our Lady of Mount Carmel Society feast, will be held Saturday, July 14 (4 p.m. to 11 p.m.) and Sunday, July 15 from noon to 10 at 1210 East Ridge Pike in Plymouth Meeting.
