Following a brief illness, Joseph Redmond Quill, surgeon, died peacefully on July 7, 2018 in Paoli, PA.

Joseph R. Quill lived in Chesterbro­ok, Wayne, PA.

He practiced general and colorectal surgery in Norristown from 1962 to 1998. Prior to his retirement, he was a member of the medical staff of Montgomery and Sacred Heart hospitals.

Born and raised in West Chester, Joe graduated from Saint Agnes High School in West Chester, from Villanova University, and from Temple University School of Medicine.

He subsequent­ly completed a general surgical residency at Temple, which was followed by residency training in colorectal surgery. He was a diplomat of the American Board of Surgery. Dr. Quill was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, the Montgomery County Medical Society, the Pennsylvan­ia Medical Society and the American Medical Associatio­n.

He was past president of the medical staff of Montgomery Hospital. After retiring, he became an instructor in the Registered Nurse First Assistant Program at Delaware County Community College, where he continued to teach for 15 years.

He served as a Captain in the US Army Medical Service from 1955 to 1957 in Sendai, Japan, where he practiced obstetrics in the US Army 11th Evacuation Hospital. While located in Japan, he studied Japanese and the Modern History of the Far East.

Surviving are his wife, Jan, and, from a previous marriage, two sons Joseph T. (Mary) of Downingtow­n, PA, and Gregory E. (Marie) of Hadley, MA, and two daughters, Marcy, of Kittery Point, ME and Carolyn Stephan (Dan), of Fairfax, VA. Joe is also survived by grandchild­ren MaryKate (Colin), LeighAnn, Jillian, Joseph, Victoria, Sean, Grace, and Margaret. He is also survived by Jan’s son, Paul Uhrig (Kim), son-in-law Stephen DiNenno, and grandchild­ren Rachel, Paul, Thomas, Nicole (Luke), Matthew, and Stephanie. He is also survived by his brother William T.(Margaret), and two nephews. Joe was predecease­d by his parents Cornelius and Anna Quill, and Jan’s daughter, Brenda DiNenno.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday July 21 from 9 – 10:50 at St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church, 50 W. Walker Rd. Wayne, PA with a Mass of Christian burial to follow at 11 AM. Interment will take place at St. Agnes Cemetery in West Chester.
