CHESTER SPRINGS » In a Region 3 tournament opener, the Spring City Red Sox survived a thriller against the Fort Washington Golden Generals 2-1 at Downingtown East High School Saturday morning.

Spring City struck for its two runs in the top of the first inning but both runs were unearned.

After Kasey Caras reached first after being hit by a pitch, Brad Clemens tried to put down a sacrifice bunt but advanced to second base on an error by the first baseman to put runners on second and third with nobody out.

Caras scored on a groundout from Andrew Huang to give the Red Sox a 1-0 lead.

Clemens later scored thanks to a two-out RBI single from Coy Walters. John Reed continued the two-out rally with a base hit, but Fort Washington starting pitcher David Keller struck out the next batter to get out of the first inning.

Spring City head coach Michael Gancasz was thrilled for his team getting the tournament-opening victory.

“Overall I say we did pretty well,” said Gancasz. “Jumping on a team with a really good pitcher getting two runs early was key for us.”

Fort Washington got its first hit of the game in the bottom of the second inning with a oneout single from Kevin Keown, but a double play in the next at bat kept the score at 2-0 after two innings.

Fort Washington eventually had its big inning in the bottom of the fourth. After the leadoff hitter Jack Jamison grounded out, Elijah Peck reached second base with a double.

Brian McPeak advanced Peck to third after reaching first on an infield single to put runners on first and third with only one out.

After Joey Monaghan lined out to left field for the second out, Keown got his second hit
