We wanted to take this time to introduce our newest members of the Norristown Police Department - Robert Nolan and Matthew Walsh.
But first a little about the manning of the police department. Officers Nolan and Walsh will add to the police department’s authorized 69 sworn police officers. The breakdown of sworn police officers is as followed: five are assigned to command staff; the bulk of 52 officers are assigned to the patrol division; seven are criminal investigations detectives;

four are assigned to our community-oriented policing engagement unit; and one is a traffic safety officer. Each of these divisions within the police department plays a vital role in providing various policing services and safety to the community. A more in depth explanation will be provided for each in future articles of Inside NPD.
Officer Rob Nolan comes to use from Blue Bell. Growing up he knew being a police officer was a profession that he would love and take pride in. From a young age he was influenced by his uncle who was a police officer and he was intrigued by the stories his uncle told of his years on the job.
Officer Nolan has an older brother and comes from a supporting family who encouraged him to accomplish his goals of being a police officer. When he was younger Officer Nolan wrestled for Greater Norristown and East Norriton wrestling teams and eventually began playing golf in high school at Archbishop John Carroll. While in high school he worked with his dad house painting as well as for Whitpain Township Parks and Recreation. Through his work experience he was able to build lasting relationships with the people he worked with and the people in the community.
Officer Nolan obtained his Associate Degree in Liberal Studies from Montgomery County Community College, and is a recent graduate of the Montgomery County Municipal Police Academy. He tested for various police departments and feels fortunate to be offered a position with the Norristown Police Department. Officer Nolan is excited to meet new people in this community and build relationships that will surpass his career here at Norristown.
Officer Matthew Walsh was born and raised in northeast Philadelphia and had aspirations of becoming a police officer at a very young age. His goal was to serve in Montgomery County once completing school. He attended Roman Catholic High School and Penn State University, where he received an associate’s degree before attending and graduating from the Montgomery County Municipal Police Academy in 2011.
Officer Walsh continued his devotion to civil service by volunteering as a volunteer fire fighter and achieving national certification as such. He completed the emergency medical technician program and worked as an EMT for the Second Alarmer’s Rescue Squad of Montgomery County.
Officer Walsh began his law enforcement career as a police officer for the Borough of Rockledge, Montgomery County until he was hired by the City of Philadelphia Police Department. Officer Walsh achieved his goal of becoming a full-time police officer in Montgomery County by being hired by the Municipality of Norristown.
In his spare time, he enjoys fishing, hunting, hiking and taking trips with his wife and daughter. Officer Walsh is proud to serve the municipality, its residents and the community and grateful to be here.
