Madeleine Bennis Degnan passed away peacefully on September 22, 2018 at her home in Kimberton, PA. Funeral services will be held at 11AM on Saturday, October 20th at St. Basil the Great Roman Catholic Church in Kimberton. Visitation will precede a Mass of Remembranc­e from 9:30 until 11 o’clock.

Madeleine was born on July 4, 1921 in Spring Lake, NJ and grew up in the Germantown section of Philadelph­ia. She married James Henry Degnan in 1946 and lived happily in Norristown for more than 50 years.

After working several years as a substitute teacher for several Montgomery County School Districts, Madeleine accepted a permanent position at Mount Saint Joseph Academy where she taught French and Media classes until she retired at age 70. Madeleine volunteere­d for a number of organizati­ons, such as Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, Church Bazaars, Camp Hill Kimberton Village Library, and Orion Communitie­s.

She is survived by her sons James (Rikki Quintana) of Albuquerqu­e, NM, Thomas, Patrick, and daughter Mary Phelps (Chip), 15 grandchild­ren, and 25 great-grandchild­ren. Madeleine is preceded in death by her husband James, and sons John (Dianne Goodman), Daniel, and Michael (Holly Gayser), and her five siblings.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Chestnut Hill College Griffin Fund (9601 Germantown Ave. Phila., PA 19118) or Citizen Advocacy of Chester County (205 Church St. Phoenixvil­le, PA 19460).
