Amazingly, the soccer postseason begins this week.

The Philadelphia Catholic League’s playoffs start with firstround games early in the week and the quarterfinal rounds on Thursday and Friday. None of the teams in the boys or girls playoff field from the Reporter/Montgomery/Times Herald area have to worry about playing their way into the quarterfinals, as all received at least a top-six seed.

On the boys’ side, Roman Catholic earned the top seed after an 11-1 regular season with its only loss a 2-0 setback to La Salle. La Salle, the two-time defending champion, is the No. 3 seed while Archbishop Wood is the No. 2 seed.

Wood will face the highest remaing seed from the 7-10 and 8-9 first round games on Friday afternoon. The Vikings have been terrific all season coming off a PCL semifinal and PIAA 3A semifinal appearance last year led by a clinical and ferocious attack. Cody Taylor, Christian Petro, Bobby Hennessey, Zach Wheatley and Shane Collier pace the Vikings, who led the PCL with 44 goals scored and were best with just six allowed in the league.

La Salle opens up the postseason with a team that’s proven very tough both in the past and just this year in Lansdale Catholic. After an uneven start, the Crusaders and second year coach Bill James finished 6-5-1 in the league and secured the sixth seed to avoid a first round game.
