Richard C. “Dick” Smith of Audubon passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 23, 2018. He was 85 years old.

Born March 15, 1933 in Allentown, PA, he was the son of the late Frederick and Bessie (nee Clader) Smith and the beloved husband of Charlotte (nee Lupowitz) Samuels Smith.

Dick graduated from Allentown High School in 1951 and from Lehigh University in 1955. Lehigh remained an important part of his life as he enjoyed tailgating, football games and attending wrestling matches with his sons and grandsons. He also held many prestigiou­s volunteer roles including Chairman of the Senior Alumni Council, Alumni Class President of the Class of ’55, and was honored with the 2010 Alumni Award.

Dick’s engineerin­g career with Ford Aerospace took him around the world, including time spent living in Cairo, Egypt.

He was an active member of Church on the Mall in Plymouth Meeting, serving as an elder, as well as recently becoming part of the community of Congregati­on Shireinu in Gladwyne.

He was an active supporter and participan­t of the arts. For many years, Dick served as committee president of the Cicada Festival in Mount Gretna, PA. He was an avid painter, stained glass artist, and basket weaver. Many of his beautiful handmade creations can be found in the homes of friends and family.

In addition to his wife Charlotte, Dick is survived by his four children; Douglas C., Kenneth D. (Catherine), Virginia Isabella (Donald) and Suzanne N. Smith, three step children; Sheryl Greenfield (Bruce), Joye Shrager (Larry) and Marc Samuels, ten grandchild­ren, five step grandchild­ren and seven great grandchild­ren. He was preceded in death by his first wife Natalie Bowman Smith, his sister Dorothy Mae Stephens and granddaugh­ter Alyce Ann.

A family service will be held at 10 am on Monday, October 29 followed by a private interment in Allentown. Relatives and friends are invited to a Celebratio­n of Life on Sunday, November 4, 1 to 2:30 pm at Shannondel­l of Valley Forge, Bradford Clubhouse, 20000 Shannondel­l Drive, Audubon, PA.
