Two injured in two-vehicle crash on Route 73

-

EARL TOWNSHIP >> Two people were injured Monday after a vehicle spun into another lane, causing a crash.

State Police at Reading said in a release Wednesday that the crash occurred as a 2004 Dodge Stratus driven by Joyce Sessions, 51, of Fleetwood, was traveling west on Route 73 near Toll House Road. Police say the vehicle spun into the eastbound lane, striking a 2014 Toyota Camry driven by Helen Roberson, 67, of East Greenville.

The Camry came to a rest in the eastbound lane where it was struck from behind by a tractortrailer driven by Jeffrey Stamets, 57, of Tamaqua, police said.

Earl Township Volunteer Fire Company, which responded to the scene Monday, stated that upon investigation, one individual was still in the vehicle and unable to get out. The firefighters then stabilized the vehicle, removed the car door and managed to get the driver out.

Both Sessions and Roberson were taken from the scene by ambulance with what police said were “moderate injuries.” Both vehicles sustained disabling damage.

Stamets was not injured and the tractor-trailer sustained moderate damage, police said.

Police said Sessions was cited for speeding.

Route 73 remained shut down for approximately two hours, according to Earl Township Volunteer Fire Department.

Oley Fire & Rescue, Oley EMS, Boyertown Fire & Rescue, Boyertown EMS, Eastern Berks Fire Department and Pennsylvania State Police all responded to the scene Monday.
