American Revolution at the Library
Tuesday, Oct. 22: To coincide with the International Conference on the American Revolution being held in Philadelphia, this October the Montgomery County-Norristown Public Library (MC-NPL) has three exciting opportunities for the public to learn more about the American Revolution. The community is invited to participate in a discussion about the American Revolution with renowned American military historian and Temple University Professor Gregory J. W. Urwin, PhD. The presentation will focus on the lives of soldiers “From the Parade Ground to the Battlefield.” The Museum of the American Revolution tapped his research for its “Finding Freedom” exhibit. Dr. Urwin has also appeared in several historical documentaries such as The Last Days of World War II, The Color Bearers, and Civil War Journal. This event is on Thursday, Oct. 17th at 6 PM at MC-NPL Historical Lecturer, Tour Guide, and Reenactor, Michael Jesberger, will present an educational program about the common soldiers who fought in the American Revolution and other events that took place in Norristown and Montgomery County at that time. He will bring Revolutionperiod items, uniforms, maps and share eyewitness accounts of the events that took place in the Philadelphia region. This program is scheduled for Tuesday, October 22nd at 6 PM at MC-NPL. Every October 19th, the United States celebrates Yorktown Day which commemorates the last major military engagement of the American Revolution. The Siege of Yorktown was a decisive victory over the British Army by General George Washington. Capital Sin: Murder in Montgomery County
Thursday, Oct. 24: Join us for a presentation in our Making History Greater Series when Charles Kelly presents Capital Sin: Murder in Montgomery County. Mr. Kelly will review select murder cases and the trial outcomes that took place between 1877 and 1962 in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. Among the cases are: a still unsolved murder that took place in West Norriton Township; a murder-kidnapping that took place in Plymouth Town
ship which predates but is very similar to the Lindbergh kidnapping of 1932; a murder for hire in Upper Merion Township which sent one man to the gallows; a West Pottsgrove Township murder of a wife by her husband; an Abington Township case that sent shock waves through that community because of the ages of the victim and perpetrator; a high society murder in Lower Merion Township; a presentation and review of the 1959 Maryann Mitchell killing in Whitemarsh Township which led to the execution of Elmo Smith. The talk will focus on the persons, places and things that make up the means, motive and in some cases the unexpected verdicts of these cases which have long faded from the minds and memories of today’s residents. The Making History Greater series features scholars, authors, and historians who are currently working on telling new stories about the complexity of our region’s history. Capital Sin: Murder in Montgomery County will take place on Thursday, October 24, 2019 at the Historical Society of Montgomery County, 1654 DeKalb Street, Norristown. The evening will begin at 6:30 with a social gathering and light refreshments. The presentation will begin at 7:00 pm and last for about an hour with time for questions at the end. This program is free and open to the public. This Making History Greater program will also be presented on Thursday, November 14, 2019.
