impossible to police, and we are not going to put our teammates in a situation to fight with customers that won’t comply ... but we are asking for you to share and support this decision.”

Neither Weis Markets nor Wegmans had announced designated hours for older shoppers as of Wednesday afternoon. Weis Markets are open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., while Wegmans’ hours are 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Hiring

A byproduct of the increased demand at grocery stores, which are identified as essential businesses for the community, is a need for additional staff. Both Giant and Boyer’s Food Markets, have announced that they are currently hiring.

Giant is hiring temporary and part-time team members across its family of brands which includes Giant, Giant Direct, and Giant Heirloom Market. Immediate positions as service associates, cashiers, general stock clerks, drivers and fulfillment center selectors are available, according to the company.

Those interested, including anyone whose employment may have been affected by the pandemic, can apply online at the Giant website or speak with any store manager.

Boyer’s is also searching for additional staff members, according to information on its website, including temporary and part-time cashiers, stock, customer service and Serve Safe certified food service personnel — due to what it calls “an unprecedented level of business.”

“If you are displaced by the current state mandate of closure or a college student home from school longer than expected come join our team now,” the statement read. Those interested can apply directly at the store.

A spokesman for Redner’s said the company is expecting to do additional hiring, but has not yet finalized details.

Purchase limits

In a MediaNews Group story published March 18, Giant had indicated that it had no purchase limits in place. That policy has now been adjusted, and the chain has begun placing a limit of two items on key categories — including paper goods and disinfectant products.

Shoppers at Wegmans will find a two-item purchase limit on certain products, according to the company.

As of noon Wednesday afternoon, the Pennsylvania Department of Health website was reporting 133 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 42 cases in Montgomery, 9 cases in Chester and 14 cases in Delaware counties.
