Goodwill Keystone temporarily suspends acceptance of donations

Asks donors to ‘hold on’ to items until mid-September

HARRISBURG » Citing the generosity of donors over the past several months, Goodwill Keystone Area has announced that it is temporarily suspending the acceptance of donations at its donation centers.

The organization operates 44 locations throughout the 22 counties it serves in central and southeastern Pennsylvania — including five locations in Berks County, seven locations in Chester County and four locations in Montgomery County.

Goodwill is taking a pause in collections until at least Sept. 15, it says, in order to get current inventory sorted and out to the retail locations. Goodwill’s 44 retail stores remain open.

“Our community has been incredibly generous over the past few months bringing us donations, and they continue to pour in,” Rick Hill, Goodwill Keystone Area’s president and CEO, said in a press release. “Because of this overwhelming support, we need to temporarily stop collection of donations so we can sort through the overabundance of goods, move items to our stores and free up needed space.

“It’s a good problem to have in one sense because the large quantity and quality of donations can be sold to help fund our mission of providing critical jobtraining programs and services for people with disabilities and other barriers to independence.”

Additionally, to help get the inventory sorted and open up storage capacity at its donation centers, Goodwill has a number of new job openings in its processing department that can accommodate flexible schedules, something Hill said so many families are “in need of these days.”

The new job listings include full- and part-time sorting and processing positions for various shifts. A listing of these jobs can be found at yourgoodwill.org/ employment.

And, for those that have donations they would like to make to Goodwill over the next few weeks, Hill asks that they hold on to them until the donation centers reopen.

“When we do, we’ll gladly accept all that you have saved for us,” he added.

As a nonprofit, 75% of Goodwill Keystone Area’s revenue is generated from the sale of donated goods in its retail stores, directly supporting its mission to help people with barriers to employment build skills, find jobs and grow careers.
