A Chester County-based used car retailer has a new name. CarSense has become CarShop as part of a global rebranding by the company’s owner, Penske Automotive

Group Inc.

The rebranding was completed March 1, and obvious to anyone driving past the company’s Chester Springs location, where the new CarShop logo adorns the building.

In addition to six CarSense locations in the U.S., Penske Automotive owns 11 CarShop locations in the U.K. A spokesman for Penske automotive said the company wanted to create one global brand for its used vehicle SuperCenters, and chose the CarShop name.

According to Penske Automotive CEO Roger Penske, the company is taking “the next step” in developing its SuperCenter brand.

“In 2020, the used vehicle SuperCenters sold over 50,000 used units and generated over $1 billion in revenue,” Penske said in a press release. “By the end of 2023, our goal is to expand CarShop from 17 locations to 40, grow annual unit sales to 150,000, and increase revenue to $2.5 to $3.0 billion, more than doubling the size of the existing business while generating earnings before taxes of approximately $100 million.”

Anthony R. Pordon, executive vice president investor relations and corporate development for Penske, said future expansion will occur in both the U.S. and the U.K.

“However, we have not provided specific guidance on the new markets at this time,” he said in an emailed response to questions.

CarShop has six locations in the U.S.: Chester Springs, Hatfield, Glen Mills, Cranberry and Robinson in Pennsylvania, as well as Mount Holly, N.J. A seventh location will open later in the spring in South Brunswick, N.J.

Pordon added that while the name has changed, the operations remain the same.

The former CarSense, with its headquarters in Chester County, has been in operation since 1997. When it was purchased by Penske Automotive in 2016, it operated five locations. At the time of the acquisition, Penske said CarSense was a “proven high-quality and trusted brand” that provided the company with an opportunity to grow its customer base.

In 2019, CarSense was ranked No. 31 on Glassdoor’s list of 50 small and medium Best Places to Work. While consistently ranked among top workplaces in the Philadelphia region, the Glassdoor ranking was the first national recognition, the company said at the time.

In February 2017, Penske Automotive Group acquired the U.K.based CarShop.
